Harrow School

The Careers service at Harrow

The Careers department aims to
  • help boys make good decisions, for example with regard to GCSE and AS-level choice
  • provide boys with information and experience of career options
  • coach boys in some skills, such as interview technique, so they are well placed subsequently to enter the world of work making a sensible and informed choice of career, armed with skills necessary for success.

In the Fifth Form all pupils receive careers guidance either via the Morrisby Careers Aptitude Test or through an "in-house" system. A report is prepared for the parents of each boy giving an action plan for the Sixth Form and beyond. Careers advice is also given through the annual Careers Convention, held in January each year, which is attended by all of the Fifth Form and most of the Sixth Form. At the Convention, over fifty expert advisers, representing many different careers from the traditional such as Accountancy and Law to the more modern such as Visual Effects and Web Design, give advice to the boys.

For the Sixth Form careers talks are organised. These are aimed at increasing awareness of specific careers and the typical qualities sought by organisations when recruiting graduates. These have included talks from the senior partner in a firm of head hunters giving an overview of careers in the City, talks by Consultants for those interested in medicine, and a talk given by recent fast stream graduate recruits at PricewaterhouseCoopers on careers in accountancy.

Sixth Formers all attend a one day course which coaches boys in public speaking and giving presentations, and in job application technique. Boys hear presentations from experts and then practice giving presentations, writing CVs and covering letters, and being interviewed.

The School is entering with renewed energy on its programme of work experience, with opportunities across a wide range of industries being provided through the Old Harrovian network. The Harrow Association will provide OH contacts for work experience, gap year placements and careers talks.
