How to apply for a place at age 13 – UK applicants
We are unable to accept any further applications for places for entry in 2008.
If after reading this page you have any other questions about Harrow or Admissions, go to the Frequently Asked Questions page (FAQ) to see if the information you need is there. Alternatively, you can email webadmissions@harrowschool.org.uk.
When the child is age 0-13, but ideally before age 11
Obtain and complete a Registration Form. You can do this by downloading the forms by clicking here or by contacting webadmissions@harrowschool.org.uk.
Your details will then be on our computer and we will send you occasional news about the School.
When the child is age 11
We receive a reference from your son's current school. He will also be called for an interview and Verbal Reasoning and English Literacy tests at Harrow. On the basis of the results of these tests, we offer either a firm place subject to passing Common Entrance or a place on a short waiting list, or we reject the application.
Age 11-13
We receive many applications after the age 11+ tests have happened. We leave a few spaces for good late applicants. These applicants need to have the recommendation of their Head Teacher. If their reference is strong in academic and extra-curricular terms, they will be seen and tested – and offered a place if they do well.
Parents may register their sons to sit the Harrow Scholarship examination any time up to two weeks before the exam takes place, normally in the March before the September of entry. To register, go to our Scholarships section and complete a Scholarships application form.
Those who do well in the Scholarship exam will be awarded a firm place at the School whether or not they actually win a Scholarship, and they will not need to sit Common Entrance.
Age 13
Candidates sit the Common Entrance Examination or take the Academic Scholarship examination.
From 2008, our Common Entrance pass mark will be an average mark of 60%. We expect candidates to achieve 55% in the core subjects of Mathematics and English.
Boarding houses
If you wish to be involved in the choice of which boarding house your son will join, you may state a preference on the Registration Form. You may be invited to come and meet one or more House Masters but this will not normally happen until we have received a reference from his current school. If at the time of application a House Master's provisional list is full we will direct you to another House.
It is not necessary to express a preference for a particular boarding house. Being signed up for a boarding house in advance of the 11+ tests does not increase the chances of being offered a place at Harrow.
