Pastoral Care
Harrow works hard to provide an effective framework of support through encouraging a culture of caring for others and personal responsibility while providing opportunities for pupils to ask for help if they need it. The 24-hour nature of School life means that members of staff are always on hand to offer support and advice whether in academic or other areas, and a system of mentoring and guidance provided by older pupils for new pupils entering at thirteen begins the process of integration in the community which continues until boys leave the School. The 2006 Inspection Report summarises what Harrow provides perfectly:
“In all aspects of school life, the staff supply outstanding support and guidance. The highly effective pastoral arrangements are centred on the houses, where the housemaster, tutors and matrons form an important team available to pupils at all times. In addition a health education tutor visits regularly and acts as a ‘listening ear’ for anyone who needs help and advice. The chaplaincy is accessible to all and fulfils a valuable role in offering confidential counselling and guidance, as does the school counsellor. Heads of houses and senior pupils take responsibility for mentoring younger boys. Relationships between staff and pupils and amongst pupils of different ages are exemplary. Senior pupils influence and encourage useful initiative and good behaviour by their example. Pupils are supportive of each other within houses and around the school, and this promotes a safe, comfortable environment within which to develop.” – 2006 Inspection Report
