Harrow School

Activities

"The provision of extra-curricular activities is excellent. There is a veritable Aladdin's cave of opportunity, with activities to suit all tastes and aptitudes. The boys' involvement is outstanding with very high standards being achieved. The school is well aware of its strength in extra-curricular provision, which contributes to its aim of preparing boys for leadership, service and personal fulfilment.
The programme is well organised by enthusiastic staff, ensuring that it is an integral part of the day and a clear manifestation of the ethos of the school. As one boy commented "Harrow wouldn’t be Harrow without all the extras."" – 2006 Inspection Report
All boys are encouraged to join the very many clubs and societies. Some are organised by academic departments or are related to games and sports; others are less easy to classify: the Debating Society, the Photography Club, the Natural History Society and Conservation group. There are clubs for rock music and opera, for bridge and for chess. The Palmerston Club hears political speakers from the outside world. In the Essay Club the boys themselves present papers on topics of their choice. The Marmots go mountaineering.

Showjumping The most important School magazine is The Harrovian. It began life well over a century ago and for many years has appeared almost every week during term time. It is produced by boy editors and printed in the School's Secretariat.

The School owns a farm which boys help to run - looking after the herd of Longhorn cattle and maintaining the farm buildings. Through Community Service and the Planned Giving committee, many boys at all levels of the School are regularly involved in work with different groups of people in need of help and care. The aims are to meet the needs of the community and to develop the awareness and potential of the boys who participate.
