A broad education - the Harrow Prize
At Harrow we believe that all boys must achieve A-level of excellence both inside and outside the classroom. In order to achieve this we have defined the minimum level of achievement which we expect in a variety of different areas. Boys who achieve this are awarded a diploma and a prize. Most boys will achieve much more than this minimum level.
The main areas of minimum achievement are as follows:
Academic achievement
- 10 GCSEs grades A-C
- 3 A-levels A-C
Arts: at least one of
- GCSE Art or AS Photography
- Grade 5 on a musical instrument
- Speaking part in a play
- Singing in a choir
Physical activity: at least two of
- Membership of a School team for five terms
- Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Silver level
- Assault course competition
- Drill competition
- Long Ducker: 10 miles run, 200 lengths of the School swimming pool or 10,000 metres on a rowing machine
Communication: at least three of
- Passed the Lower Sixth literacy course
- Participation in a debating team
- Article or creative writing in any School magazine
- Read lesson in Chapel
- Given a talk in Chapel or Thought for the Day
- Helped to write House website
Service: at least two of
- Community Service
- Conservation
- House Monitor
- Raised £100 for charity
Skill: at least three of
- Achieved the Shell ICT competence certificate
- AS-level Critical Thinking
- Contributed to a School exhibition
- First Aid course
- Life-Saving course
- Cookery course
- Canoeing course
- Duke of Edinburgh Award, Silver level
- Rifle Corps membership for two years
- Lower Sixth induction day
- Lower Sixth personal development course
